The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, first launched in April 2022, is a £450 million scheme initiated by the UK Government as part of a wider £3.9 billion Heat and Buildings Strategy.

The grant scheme is designed to help homeowners upgrade their traditional fossil fuel boilers to a low-carbon heating system. Such as air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps, which are eligible for grant funding through the initiative. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is set to run until 2028.

By incentivising property owners to invest in low-carbon heating, the government hopes to increase the number of low-carbon heating system installations in England and Wales. This will help reduce carbon emissions from home heating to net zero by 2050.

The grant amount for both air source and ground source heat pumps to £7,500. 

You will be eligible for the grant you:

  • Own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants)
  • Have installed your new heating system on or after 1 April 2022
  • You are replacing fossil fuel heating systems – such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)
  • You have a valid EPC for the property.
  • You’re still eligible if you’ve already had funding to make your property more energy efficient, for example by insulating it.

Your self-build property is eligible if:

  • You or the original owner built it yourself or you paid a builder to build it.
  • The property has never been owned by a business or organisation.
  • You’ll need to show proof that your property is a self-build, for example, a copy of the title deeds.

Properties you cannot get a grant for

  • Most newly built properties
  • Social housing
  • A property that’s already been given government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler
