Underfloor Heating Installation in a New‑Build Bungalow

A self builder in Barrington, constructing a timber-framed modern three‑bedroom bungalow in required a highly efficient, low‑temperature heating system that would complement the property’s excellent insulation and meet future energy‑efficiency standards. The goal was to deliver:

  • Even, comfortable heat throughout the home
  • Maximum efficiency when paired with a heat pump
  • A clean aesthetic with no radiators
  • Long‑term reliability and low running costs

A full wet underfloor heating (UFH) system was designed and installed across the entire 120 m² floor area.

Property Profile

FeatureDetails
Property typeNew‑build detached bungalow
Floor area150 m²
ConstructionTimber‑frame with high‑performance insulation
Heat sourceAir source heat pump (designed for 35–40°C flow)
Floor finishMix of LVT and engineered wood

The bungalow’s low heat‑loss design made it ideal for underfloor heating, which performs best in well‑insulated, airtight homes.

1. Wet Underfloor Heating System

  • High‑quality multilayer pipework with 50‑year warranty
  • Independently controlled heating zones
  • Manifold with flow meters and actuators
  • Smart thermostats in each room

2. Floor Build‑Up

  • 100 mm PIR insulation
  • UFH pipework fixed to clip‑rails
  • 50–65 mm liquid screed for rapid heat transfer
  • Suitable for low‑temperature heat pump operation

3. Controls & Integration

  • Zoned smart thermostats for precise temperature control
  • Weather‑compensated heat pump integration
  • Optimised flow temperatures for maximum efficiency

Installation Process

1. Design & Heat‑Loss Calculations

A room‑by‑room heat‑loss assessment ensured correct pipe spacing and flow rates. High‑demand areas such as the open‑plan kitchen/living space were designed with 100 mm pipe spacing, while bedrooms used 150 mm spacing.

  • System flushed and pressure‑tested
  • Flow rates balanced
  • Thermostats programmed
  • Heat pump flow temperature set to 35°C for optimal efficiency

Comfort

  • Even heat distribution throughout the home
  • No cold spots or draughts
